In a strategic event preceding the 5th Ministerial Partnership for Transatlantic Energy and Climate Cooperation, the Romanian Atomic Forum (ROMATOM) in partnership with the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) and supported by the the Romanian Energy Minister and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), organised a crucial Nuclear Energy Industry Executive Roundtable.
Over 50 leading executives from the nuclear sectors of Romania, the US, and other European nations gathered at the roundtable to tackle the challenges facing the nuclear industry and to prioritize governmental actions that would support the industry and accelerate the development of nuclear technologies, including
SMRs.Key industry issues such as financing, regulatory efficiency, supply chain complexities, workforce development, and international cooperation were thoroughly discussed. The main objective of this high-level meeting was to formulate and synchronize strategic policy recommendations that would support the progress of nuclear energy. These priorities were subsequently communicated directly to government officials at the next day’s multilateral meeting.
Cosmin Ghita, CEO of Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica SA, emphasized the strategic importance of the roundtable, stating: „At Nuclearelectrica, we are committed to leading Romania’s transition to a sustainable energy future by significantly reducing CO2 emissions and enhancing our nuclear capacity with new CANDU units and small modular reactors. Our strategic projects not only support Romania’s decarbonization targets but also drive economic growth and job creation, reinforcing our position as a regional leader in clean energy.”
Echoing the sentiment, Ted Jones, Senior Director, National Security and International Programs at NEI, highlighted the collaborative nature of the roundtable, remarking: „This was a great opportunity for the nuclear energy industry to align on recommendations for policymakers across the region, and we expect this conversation to continue.”
Teodor Chirica, President Emeritus of the ROMATOM, added: „By convening nuclear energy leaders at events like these, we are laying the groundwork for innovative and sustainable solutions that not only meet our energy requirements but also tackle global climate challenges. This roundtable serves as a critical forum for shaping the strategies that will drive our collective efforts forward, ensuring that nuclear energy remains a key component in the global pursuit of a cleaner future.”
The outcomes of this roundtable are expected to influence the future direction of energy policies not only in Romania but across Europe and the United States, underscoring the international cooperation that is vital for the advancement of nuclear technology in the fight against climate change.
